Bariatrician: A physician practicing bariatrics, the field of medicine concerned with weight loss, also called a bariatric physician. The terms are used interchangeably. Bariatric physicians specialize in the medical treatment of obesity.
Obesity definitions can vary greatly, but in general, it is a chronic condition defined by an excess amount of body fat. Obesity results from a complex interaction of genetics, exercise, diet and lifestyle causing energy intake to exceed energy expenditure.
BMI (body mass index) is a common tool to measure healthy weight. BMI does not actually measure body fat but is a surrogate indicator of total body fat, which relates to risk of disease and death. The BMI chart is located below or you can refer to the BMI calculator located at the top of this page. You can also approximate by dividing weight in pounds (lbs) by height in inches (In) squared and multiplying by a conversion factor of 703. The following are the classifications for BMI by Dr. Richardson:
- Underweight-BMI lower than 18.5
- Normal Weight-BMI 18.5-24.9
- Overweight is a BMI of 25-30
