About Dr. Richardson

After completing medical school, Dr. Richardson began his specialty career as an emergency medicine physician. He enjoyed the satisfaction and adrenaline rush of working with patients needing acute care. However, over time he noticed a disturbing trend of younger and younger patients coming to the emergency room with diabetes, hypertension, heart attacks, and strokes.

Many of those individuals were overweight, obese, or morbidly obese. He came to realize that a better way for him to treat such patients would be to help them reduce their weight before they developed the medical complications (including death) that he was seeing in the Emergency Department.

As a result, he embarked upon educating himself in the field of medical weight management so that he could become both a teacher and a deliverer of better preventive health care. Knowing that even top athletes benefit by having a good coach, Dr. Richardson tries to be the best coach for all his patients. In his quest for knowledge and training, he joined the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, whereby he eventually led that group as president, chairman of the board, fellow, master fellow and even Bariatrician of the Year.

Dr. Richardson has taken and passed the specialty testing for advanced obesity certification, which allowed him to become a Diplomate of the American Board of Bariatric Medicine and its subsequent replacement, the American Board of Obesity Medicine.

Part of his current mission now is to train other doctors in treating obesity and its associated medical complications. He tries to have his patients not only focus on a specific number on the scale, but to teach them healthy lifestyles and habits that will sustain them and their families throughout life. His emphasis is not on dieting as much as it is on healthy eating, appropriate exercise and behavior changes.

Dr. Richardson’s practice provides simplified nutritional information, which helps each patient experience success in losing and controlling weight by following individualized guidance. His program has been in place for over 30 years of actual practice, resulting in many thousands of patient success stories!

Dr. Richardson’s Approach

Dr. Larry Richardson is an obesity medicine physician with 30 years of experience in medical weight management. He specializes in the study and science of overweight, obesity and associated conditions.

Dr. Richardson's staff will help you identify your ineffective eating habits and change them for the better. In addition, our program also uses medications specifically designed to help you through this change, along with ways to monitor your diet and the types of food you are eating.

Our medically supervised weight loss program also consists of medical testing including: periodic body composition analysis, EKGs (which evaluate your heart) and various lab work – complete blood counts (CBC) platelets, blood chemistry, and lipid and thyroid panels. These tests will be taken at appropriate intervals in Dr. Richardson’s office to ensure that you are continuing down a steady and healthy path for medically appropriate weight loss.

This program is not a quick fix. Because we believe in a proven approach to weight loss, each month you will have a consultation at Dr. Richardson’s office where we will evaluate your progress to ensure a continuation of healthy weight reduction. However, patients are encouraged to call the office between visits if they are experiencing difficulty or problems with their program or medications.

We are not just a weight loss clinic or a surgical solution. We focus on shepherding our clients into lasting lifestyle changes that help them manage their weight for the long term.
